The Music Room’s ‘Gear Shift’ Program Puts Musical Instruments in the Hands of the Disadvantaged

About the program

You can’t learn to play an instrument if you don’t have one. You need the gear. The Music Room’s Gear Shift program takes the community’s unwanted instruments that are still in repairable condition and turns them into instruments for a disadvantaged child or adult who might otherwise not have the chance to play.

12 years. 200+ instruments

Now in its twelfth year, more than 200 instruments and accessories have been provided through local organizations such as Clearbrook Center in Palatine, Lutherbrook Child and Adolescent Center in Addison, Ill. and the Palatine Opportunity Center. “We are extremely grateful to our customers and community for making this program possible,” said The Music Room Owner Carol Cook.

Instrument donations can be dropped off at The Music Room any time during store hours. If the instruments are repairable, our expert craftsman will restore them to excellent playing condition. We then work with our community partners who ensure that the instruments get into the hands of those who need them most.
